Story of this Icon
Saint Macarius the Great of Egypt was a remarkable desert father who became one of the most influential monastics in Christian history. After being widowed early in life, he dedicated himself to spiritual pursuits while caring for his elderly parents. Following their deaths, he sought spiritual guidance and eventually settled in the desert, where he faced and overcame numerous trials, including false accusations and demonic attacks. Ordained to the priesthood at forty, he founded the desert monastic community of Scetis and was known throughout the land for his profound spiritual wisdom but equally great humility.
