Symbolism

The Orthodox cross features a short bar on the top that represents the sign placed above Christ. It reads, "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews".

The middle bar, the longest, is the bar upon which Our Lord's arms were stretched and nailed.

The bottom bar slants in two directions; on Christ's right side is the penitent thief St. Dismas (upward/heaven) and on His left side is the impenitent thief Gestas (downward/hell)
